Introduction
This article covers connecting to your hosting plan using SFTP.
Important: Plain FTP is not available on modern versions of cPanel, including our shared hosting environment, as it is an outdated and insecure protocol. Instead of FTP, you can connect using SFTP (FTP over SSH) which is secure.
Connection Information
To connect with SFTP, you will need the following information:
- Server IP (Host): You can find this by logging into cPanel and checking the General Information sidebar:
- Port: 2223
- Username: Your cPanel username.
- Password: Your cPanel password.
SFTP Clients
All modern FTP clients should support SFTP. Some common clients are FileZilla, Cyberduck, and WinSCP.
Connecting
For this example, we will use FileZilla, but the steps should be similar for other clients.
- In FileZilla, go to File > Site Manager.
- Select New site and enter any name.
- Change Protocol to SFTP - SSH File Transfer Protocol.
- Fill out the connection information from earlier. For example:
- Select Connect.
Troubleshooting
If you encounter any errors such as "connection refused" or "connection timed out", it is possible that the firewall on the server has blocked your IP address. If you encounter an error such as this, we can unblock your IP address for you. For us to do so, please open a ticket with us. In the ticket, provide your current IPv4 address. You can find this here.
